Google and chatbot company Character.AI have agreed to settle a case filed by Megan Garcia, who said her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer, died by suicide after developing an emotional attachment to a chatbot on the platform. While the financial terms of the settlement were not disclosed, the case has already made history as one of the first in the United States to directly accuse AI companies of causing psychological harm to a minor.

When a Chatbot Felt Like a Real Person
According to court filings, Sewell spent long hours interacting with a chatbot modeled after a popular character from Game of Thrones. What made the experience different from ordinary technology, his mother argued, was how personal it felt.

Although Character.AI is a separate company, Google was also named in the case due to its close involvement with the startup.
Character.AI was founded by former Google engineers. Later, Google rehired those founders as part of a deal that included licensing the chatbot technology. Garcia’s legal team argued that this relationship made Google more than just a distant partner; it made the tech giant a co-creator of the product.
Both companies denied wrongdoing. They argued that users control how they interact with AI tools and that the technology itself was not responsible for Sewell’s death.

Other AI companies are facing similar scrutiny. OpenAI, for example, is dealing with a lawsuit tied to claims that ChatGPT contributed to dangerous thoughts in a mentally ill adult.
Together, these cases suggest a growing reckoning for the AI industry, one that asks whether innovation has moved faster than safety and accountability.

Mental health experts warn that teenagers are especially vulnerable to AI systems designed to mimic empathy. A chatbot that responds instantly, never judges, and always listens can feel safer than opening up to parents, teachers, or friends.
